Counterpoint The cultural relations think-tank of the British Council

Public Diplomacy
In the global information age, nations are assigning greater attention and resources to developing strategies for promoting the national interest. In such a context, the role of public diplomacy, long considered as an afterthought of diplomatic practice, is assuming a frontline role in international relations. What impact does public diplomacy have on the power relations asserted in the traditional diplomatic, military and economic spheres? By incorporating the variety of mass persuasion approaches including cultural exchange, nation branding, propaganda and niche diplomacy into a broad conception of public diplomacy we are led to consider two integral questions: What possibilities are open to public diplomacy and what role will dialogue play in its continued development?
