A one-day conference held in partnership with the Royal Commonwealth Society, AFFORD, Africa++ and the Royal African Society on 22 September 2007 Effective and inspiring leadership at all levels is increasingly recognised to be the key to positive social and political change. Leadership is thus one of the critical issues facing Africa today. Emerging and established African leaders, community organisers and students came together to share ideas and experiences of leadership at the Royal Commonwealth club.
Our prominent panelists William Gumede and Dr Wangui wa Goro presented thier ideas on leadership issues from the top down to bottom up, while Chukwu-Emeka Chikezie, Onyekachi Wambu and Meera Shah explored the issue from inside out and outside in. Each panel was followed by lively workshops where participants debated, amongst other things, the conditions that stimultate leadership, oppostition politics and the unique contributions of young people to leadership. The conference provided a unique opportunity for organisations, communities, thinkers and leaders to come together and debate new ideas on the future of African leadership. It was inspired by the publication of Under the Tree of talking: Leadership for change in Africa, a collection of essays wirtten by 18 distinguished African thinkers and commentators edited by Onyekachi Wambu. We intend to carry the outcomes of this event forward by continuing to develop positive leadership within the African diaspora and to produce action plans to be presented to decision makers in global forums.
