Latest Podcast: Humanitarianism, global communities and the self, an interview with Bertrand Taithe

Are we hardwired to be humanitarian? Does the problem of ‘the gift’ produce cultural heirarchies? What is the relationship of colonialism and humanitarianism? What understandings of the self drive humanitarian actions and the way they are received? Is humanitarianism predominantly cosmopolitan or spiritual?
In this podcast Jonny Mundey talks to Bertrand Taithe, professor of cultural history and executive director of the Humanitarian and Conflict Response Institute, at the University of Manchester. They discuss humanitarianism as a historical phenomenon.
People are far more aware of… subtle differences that emerge culturally, that we shouldn’t take for granted that the person you come to help is like you necessarily, but you should take it for granted that they are as good as you.
